So my body clock sucks. I eat late, I stay up way too late, I struggle to get out of bed every single day and I seem to have got used to 5-6 hours sleep each night.
I’ve been using an app on my iPhone called ‘Sleep Cycle’ and it monitors your sleeping pattern and tries to wake you up, right when you’re ready. More on that later.
I’ve noticed that my sleeping pattern is erratic at the best of times. Some nights I’ll doze right off and others I’m restless throughout. It doesn’t help that my bed is slightly too short, or that a little too much light comes through my curtains but all the same, I hate waking up in the morning!
I sit on the sofa, late into the night, then potter about not really doing anything. When I eventually get to bed (sometimes I fall asleep on the sofa first) I’ll feel awake again and it will take me another hour of tossing and turning before I can drift off. Although there are occasions when as soon as my head hits the pillow, I’m out.
It takes several alarms, all strategically placed and strategically timed to ensure that my sleepy hazy ass gets out of bed so I can have some breakfast, a cigarette and a shower before I head off to the daily grind.
One of my aims in 2011 is to start running again. I always feel good when I run, I just need to motivate myself to do it. So in a bold move (for me anyway…) I’m going to reset my body clock, try to live better and start to run again.
It’s now 21:43 on Friday 14 January and I’m only just about to have dinner. This is my final night in my old ways… So I’m going to enjoy it!

Ahh dude – this sounds so familiar. I’m hoping my holiday will help cure it next week. GAH!
Dude, once again I find myself on your blog, how? I don’t know, but anyway this sounds scarily familiar to me too. This week has by far been the oddest, I’ve been getting to bed early enough for a change but have been getting progressively later at actually getting to sleep… and the first night started at 2am on Sunday so you can imagine how late it’s gotten by now (Wednesday)… and yet I’ve been waking up without much problem for work (often waking wayyyy before the first of my 3 alarms) and haven’t felt tired particularly during the day! I don’t get it, I don’t think I’ve hit R.E.M sleep once so far this week.
Anyway I’m babbling but just thought you should know you aren’t alone hehe.
Oh and in response to the Spider-Maguire thing, I concur – 2 was by far the best but that’s probably because he ‘manned-up’ a bit, I think he just portrayed PP as a bit too wimpish across the trilogy and then as you suggested went a bit too emo in 3. Maybe it was Raimi’s fault?
I’ve been trying really hard but no matter how tired I am after work, I just can’t seem to get to sleep at a decent hour! I’ve got a few more days to sort it out but it’s getting easier to wake up. Maybe that’s all I needed… Gonna keep trying though, waking up early on my day off will be the real test!
Raimi could be to blame, 3 was so far out compared to t’others but I’m intrigued with the new one… I’ll wait and see I think.
My entire life I’ve been impossible to wake. My mom has shaken me off onto the floor, where I continue sleeping. Until late last year, I’ve had 4 alarms set every night, only to hear NONE of them. My partner had the job of waking me in place of my mom. For the year I lived alone, I was never on time for work, and I actually woke up on a Thursday at 1 PM after having gone to bed at 1 AM on Wednesday – and had no idea I missed a day until I saw a “no call, no show” on my schedule at work.
My neurologist put me on meds to manage my migraines, and as a beneficial side effect they manage my sleep. It turns out I’ve pretty much missed REM sleep for most of my life and therefore slept way too long without the benefit of feeling rested, no matter how long I sleep. But now, I sleep very well for 8 hours, and wake up as if someone set me like a timer. No alarm needed. It has made a difference like you wouldn’t believe. If you can get yourself regulated, and make sure you’re sleeping well, you’ll be much better off. Check your bed and pillow – tension from improper support can be a factor in the tossing and turning.
So – how’s it been going since January?
My sleeping pattern has got a bit better, but I gotta admit some of the shifts I work make it hard to get into too much of a routine!
I do find it easier going to bed earlier now though and I do feel more awake in the mornings and although there are some nights I still struggle, or I wake up on the sofa! I do seem to be getting more sleep overall.
So, although it isn’t what I wanted out of the experiment, I’ve got some kinda positive result out of it!
